Frequently Asked Questions
You’re called Girls on Film. Do you only accept films?
No. We want to make our events as diverse as possible, so we accept all kinds of creative work from all kinds of creative women—filmmakers, poets, actors, writers, musicians, DJs, artists, painters, dancers—whatever you can think of that is made by or promoting women.
Do you only accept work by women?
Primarily, yes, but we’re not excluding men—that’s why we say “work by OR promoting women.”
How do I submit work?
By completing a submission form and returning it to us with your work or examples of your work.
Can I submit more than one piece of work?
Yes! You just need to complete separate submission forms for each piece of work you would like us to consider.
Your submission form says not to submit physical artwork. What does this mean?
This refers to artists thinking of sending framed or unframed work through the post. We will only ask for framed pieces of work once we have made our decisions as to what we will show at our next event. To submit artwork, we ask for prints, photos, email attachments or CDs of your work so we can select artists to show on the night. We can also consider your work online if you already have a website.
I’m a writer. Can I submit work?
Yes, of course! We can currently only accept short (no more than 10-15 minutes) submissions of writing (scenes, monologues) for actors to perform on the night. If you have actors in mind, please let us know. We need to see examples of your work, so please send these along with your submission form.
I’m a performer. Can I submit work?
Of course! Combining a variety of live performance with films and artwork is part of what makes us unique! If you have a demo or showreel, we would ask you to submit that with your submission form so we can see what you can do. If you don’t have either of these, we would like a CV and some examples of what you do (be it online, written work, etc). For performance pieces, we again ask that your piece is no longer than 15 minutes.
Are you looking for DJs?
We are always looking for new female DJs, so we would just ask you to complete and return the submission form, letting us know what kind of music you usually play, and if you have a demo or links to where we can hear snippets of a DJ set, send it along!
I’m in a band, and we’d like to perform. How long could our set be?
Depending on the amount of work we’ve selected for the event, your set could be between 15-30 minutes long. We would let you know once we’ve selected you how long we anticipate your set to be.
I’m a filmmaker. Should I send you a film or can you view it online?
We prefer to receive DVDs or films in .avi format for making our selections, but we can view films online as well.
If I’m sending a film, what format should I send it in?
DVD or .avi format. Remember, if you’re sending films from outside the UK, we need to be able to view them, so in this case, .avi would be best.
How long can my film be?
No more than 15 minutes.
Do you have any themes that my work has to adhere to?
No. Again, we want to make the events as diverse as possible, so we don’t make you adhere to any set themes.
Will I hear from you when you receive my work?
Due to the number of submissions we receive, we unfortunately can’t contact you when we’ve received your work. You will hear from us after the submission deadline as to whether or not we have selected your work.
Will I get my work back?
If you send a self-addressed stamped envelope, we will return your work to you.
If I’m not selected for one event, can I resubmit work?
If you’ve submitted a piece of work, and we have not selected it for one event, we will, if you wish, reconsider it for our next event (you just need to let us know). In certain cases, we will ask if we can hold onto your work for future events (beyond the two) and will let you know when we use it.
What happens when my work is selected?
We will let you know if we select your work to show at our event, and if you haven’t already done so, we will ask you for a brief biography to go in the event programme. Depending on what work you’ve submitted, we may need a different format, or we may ask you what you need if you’ll be performing on the night. Don’t worry—we will be in touch.
• For artists, photographers, painters, etc—we do prefer you to come down to the venue on the day/evening of the event to put up your own artwork and also to take it down when the exhibition is finished (at least a week after the event). If you can’t do this, you can send us your pieces for us to put up, but we can not be held responsible for damage in the post, etc. We would also ask you to include postage or pre-paid packaging for returning it to you. Please also bring/send business cards or labels for your artwork.
Your work can be available for sale. We just ask for a 10% commission if you sell any work through a Girls on Film event.
• Performers—we will need to find out what equipment you may need for your performance. We also like to meet with the performers a week or so before the event to go over any needs, requirements or just so you can see the space.
All selected artists will be put on the guest list for the event, so you won’t need to pay. Unfortunately, as we fund the event ourselves, we can’t put an extra guest on the list as well.
Will I get paid?
Again, as we currently fund the event ourselves, we can’t pay you or pay expenses to be a part of the event. You will, however, be eligible to have your biography and some work posted on our website so you will get more exposure, so that’s always a good thing!
I have a question that you haven’t posted an answer to. How can I get more information?
