When?
Girls on Film began in March 2005 when a group of creative women gathered to meet at the Cornerhouse in Manchester. Alissa Juvan had contacted the women, all part of Media Training North West's Digit-elle scheme, with a view to starting up a film group.
Why?
They found that between them they had plenty of diverse talents, but much of the work they’d produced was sitting on shelves collecting dust. Was it confidence they lacked? Or was it a lack of opportunity? Whatever it was, they decided to do something about it. As many of the women's talents spread across different types of media, it seemed only natural that the Girls on Film events should be multimedia showcases. And so, Girls on Film put on their first event in July 2005 showcasing short films, visuals and DJs.
Since this first event, they have enjoyed an overwhelming response from artists of all kinds from all over the world including Australia, USA, Spain and Malta. Girls on Film continues to put on events every few months showcasing short films of all genres, art work of every medium and a variety of performances and music. Going from strength to strength, the Girls have now successfully partnered with organisations and festivals, such as the Salford Film Festival, to add their unique blend of female-centric art and performance to the mix. The Girls hope that their events will grow bigger and that one day they can put on a Girls on Film festival. They also hope that this website will help build Girls on Film as a network of creative women everywhere.
Who?
A number of women have contributed their time and hard work to organising the Girls on Film events. Alice Harland worked with us from the beginning but has now moved to London and is enjoying a new job at BBC White City. Kim May has helped with sponsorship and funding and Liz Morse has recently helped with the administration of the events. However, in particular, there are three women who have made Girls on Film what it is today. They are Alissa Juvan, Kate Jessop and Tanya Smith.
